The Power Five conferences should get together and promise to only play Power Five teams moving forward. There was not much good in the year 2020, but one thing that was a positive was when the SEC played only conference opponents. And if it is done, do it against a state opponent so that a team from the same state can get the financial benefit. If every team needs an exhibition game against this type of opponent, OK, do it in August. If any Georgia player has to “get up” to play Clemson (who, by the way, Georgia should open the season with every single year), they probably shouldn’t be wearing red and black. But we see high school teams struggle all the time when they play a lesser opponent against a team that they know they can likely easily beat.Įven though it was a tougher opponent, Georgia arguably played better two years ago against Clemson in week one than they did against UT-Martin. Do you think Benedictine, the top-rated team in Quad-A, had any trouble getting up for their game Friday night with Ware County, the top-rated team in 5A? Obviously not, since the Cadets won by 10 points. It was perhaps the most perfect, yes perfect, opening-game performance you’ll ever see.īut wasn’t it easier for the Georgia players to have the entire 2022 summer to get up for that Oregon game compared to this summer, when they practically knew the season doesn’t really start until they go to Auburn on September 30? Or maybe some were comparing the UT-Martin game to last year’s season opener, when Georgia destroyed 11 th-ranked Oregon 49-3. While some could argue TCU turned out to be a cash-for-clunker game, you weren’t going to worry about the players getting up for a shot at a second national title. Well, they may have been comparing the performance to the last game Georgia had played, when the Bulldogs blew out TCU in the National Championship game. Some believed Georgia looked flat against UT-Martin. But, of course, if Georgia had played Mercer and given up seven points, some would have run to the Dawg Vent to complain about giving up a single touchdown to that type of program. Probably the only SEC fan base that was happy with their cash-for-clunker game was Ole Miss, as they beat Mercer 73-7. And yet for some, it wasn’t a good enough win. It wasn’t the cleanest game in Georgia’s history, but it was a 41-point win. In week one, Georgia beat UT-Martin 48-7.
The expectations for a team like Georgia against this type of opponent are always going to be unrealistic. Had it even been a lower-tiered team from another Power Five conference, it might have been different. I tried probably 10 people, some of whom don’t regularly go to Athens for games. I even had two tickets that I couldn’t give away. There was zero interest from the others in driving to Athens to see a blowout. I, with my press credential, was the only one of the six going. Three of the five have UGA season tickets. On Friday, I had lunch with five UGA fans. Don’t give me the, “Well, it’s good for Ball State’s program to get that money to help fund other sports.” Why should Georgia fans care about that? The preference is to watch a good solid, yes, even competitive football game. Yet because the SEC wanted the home-and-home with Oklahoma to go away, which was originally scheduled for September 9 in Athens, Georgia had to pivot and find another opponent – a cash-for-clunker opponent. Nothing is worse than the useless games that many fans just don’t give a flip about. There is nothing more damaging to college football than cash-for-clunker games. You know, the teams that are paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to get their brains beat in just so the home team can fill out its schedule? It’s got to be a cash-for-clunker opponent on the opposite sideline. Football fans will sit through any type of weather if they really want to. There is only one reason a two-time defending national championship football team would have empty rows in a game at its home stadium.
